GENERAL DESCRIPTION & APPLICATIONS |
||
Imidazolidine is
the hydrogen-saturated analogue of imidazole and
imidazoline dihydrogenated one. Imidazoline has a single double bond but
imidazolidine has no double bond. The resonance structures of imidazole keep the
aromaticity intact. Imidazole is a base and an excellent nucleophile. It reacts
at the NH nitrogen. Generaly nucleophilic substitutions at the carbon atoms
except C-2 are difficult with imidazole. But It is susceptible to electrophilic
attacks at the carbon atoms with imidazoline and imidazolidine.
Imidazoline molecules are sympathomimetic agents
effecting on alpha-adrenergic receptors primarily
and little effecting on beta-adrenergic
receptors. The imidazoline
derivatives of adrenergic alpha-agonist include oxymetazoline
(CAS RN: 1491-59-4) , xylometazoline
(CAS RN: 526-36-3), tetrahydrozoline
(CAS RN: 84-22-0) , and naphazoline
(CAS RN: 835-31-4), They are found in
topical ophthalmic and nasal decongestants.
Apraclonidine (p-amino substituted clonidine) is an adrenergic agonist that acts predominantly at alpha adrenergic receptors; used to treat and prevent ocular hypertension. It reduces intraocular pressure in the treatment of open-angle glaucoma. |
